Historic move sees the topic added to the UN agenda
Climate Action in Tourism has been included in the official COP Action Agenda under the Presidency of Azerbaijan for the first time in the history of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP).
As part of the Azerbaijan COP29 Presidency, Tourism Day (20 November) brought together global leaders, policymakers and stakeholders in the Azerbaijan capital of Baku for high-level discussions on how tourism could contribute to combating climate change.
The First Ministerial Meeting on 'Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism' was an historic gathering showcasing tourism's potential to combat climate change.
The Tourism Day agenda at COP29 has been developed to establish tourism as a strategic sector for climate action through several significant initiatives, which begins with the launch of the Baku Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism.

The COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Action in Tourism emphasised the urgent need for accelerated climate action in the tourism sector. It will commit endorsers to promoting sustainable tourism practices by reducing emissions and increasing resilience in the sector.
The programme also included presentations on key topics such as utilising data to promote sustainable tourism and analysing the factors driving tourism-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The inclusion of tourism in COP29 highlights the country’s role as a pioneer in addressing the intersection of climate change and economic development.
