Historic Madrid hotel The Palace restored, rebranded and taking reservations

Former Westin property becomes The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel

One of Spain’s most iconic hotels has been restored to its former glory and reimagined as The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid by Marriott International. A legendary grande dame, the historic hotel is now open and taking reservations.

Located in a prime location in Madrid's historic UNESCO World Heritage Site Paisaje de la Luz, the property is surrounded by parks, museums and landmarks. Previous guest include Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Ernest Hemingway.

Formerly The Westin Palace, the refurbishment took two years and involved renovating the grand 1912 facade and impressive stained-glass dome.

That restoration included the 8,000-square-metre facade, uncovering some long-hidden details and the 1,875 glass panes of the dome, which was dismantled in order to be returned to its original condition.

The interior design by Lázaro Rosa-Violán studio blends classic luxury with contemporary design, while the 470 rooms and suites pay tribute to Madrid, including hand-painted wallpapers inspired by El Retiro Park, and bathroom mosaics of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Marble fireplaces, chandeliers and rich fabrics add a sophisticated feel.

Sitting beneath the glass dome is the all-day restaurant and cocktail bar La Cúpula. The menu includes dishes inspired by previous guests including Pablo Picasso’s Waldorf Salad and Julio Camba’s Steak Tartare.

The former Museo Bar has been renamed 27 Club in tribute to the poets, writers and artists of the so-called Generation of ‘27 who frequented it. The cocktail bar is a living museum of the hotel’s past, with original guest books, illustrations from the design archives.

The bar menu includes a 1912 John Collins and a take on the negroni called Un Americano en el Prado.

Helen Leighton, Vice President, Luxury Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International said The Palace has been "significant" in Madrid's cultural tapestry for more than one hundred years.

“Joining The Luxury Collection has allowed the team to truly embrace the building's eclectic history, portrayed throughout the meticulous restoration.”

The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid is one of 12 new hotels Marriott is opening in 2025 in key destinations across Europe and the Middle East (EMEA), including luxury properties in Saudi, Cape Verde, South Africa and destinations in Europe, as well as the third The Ritz-Carlton Yacht.

Set to make its debut in Saudi as part of Saudi's Red Sea Project, SLS Red Sea Edition is a 240-key hotel with multiple restaurants and dry bars, a spa, a pool and a gym. Meanwhile, in Türkiye, the country's second Aloft property will open in Karaköy, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
