India’s Akasa Air eyes ambitious Gulf expansion

Low-cost carrier aims to double daily services to GCC region

After launching in March 2024, Akasa Air has already set its sights set on expanding its flight operations to Gulf destinations, with an ambitious goal of doubling its daily flight schedule in the region.

The move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to establish a presence in international markets, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

As a new player in the aviation market, Akasa Air aims to offer affordable fares on routes that are known for their high passenger traffic.

Akasa is currently operating to five destinations within the Gulf – Abu Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Kuwait City and Riyadh – from Mumbai and expects to expand to more in the near future.

The airline’s founder and CEO Vinay Dube said: "Regarding the destinations we’ll go to, whether we’ll increase frequencies from daily to double daily flights, or hit a city in the Gulf from three or four different points in India, those specifics are hard to predict.

“Our growth tends to be closely correlated with economic flows between India and the various Gulf countries. For example, as we see more investment in Saudi Arabia, it will be natural for us to follow.”

The airline’s entry into the international market comes at a time when demand for air travel between India and the Gulf region is surging, with millions of Indian expatriates living in Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi and Qatar.
