London's Montcalm Mayfair reopens as Autograph Collection hotel

Grade II-listed hotel's Presidential Suite features works by artist Joan Miró

Montcalm Mayfair, London, Autograph Collection has reopened its historic doors in the heart of Mayfair.

Fresh from a two year-long transformation, the Grade II-listed hotel with 151 rooms and suites has been completely reimagined, bringing a “sensitive luxury” to the UK property.

Led by award-winning architects Holland Harvey alongside interior designers Studio Est and Studio Mica, the building’s Georgian character has been lovingly preserved, while also introducing modern amenities.

Described as “conscious, cultured, characterful and considerable”, the refurbishment features furnishings produced by social-impact businesses, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to "sensitive luxury", and features more than 800 artworks sourced or commissioned from artists or antique markets.

There are subtle nods throughout to the property’s location, mere steps from Marble Arch, with arch carvings in the bespoke furniture, and a botanical theme that runs throughout, including a handmade chandelier in the bar made up of 150 lampshades to look like a blooming flower.

The property has been expanded with floor-to-ceiling glazing drenching all public spaces with natural light, and an extension means there are now 15 more rooms, including three new signature suites.

The standout is the Botanical Suite which features a private entrance and extra living space, providing London’s only fully private hotel suite experience. The Presidential Suite features rare works by artist Joan Miró, and the Royal Suite houses a curated collection of lithographs.

Room decor is calming in a palette of earthy tones, including beige, mushroom and taupe with flashes of green or terracotta, and all come with marble bathrooms, Frette bed linens and bathroom amenities from British perfumer, Penhaligon’s.

Dining highlights include Lilli by Akira Back, where the Michelin-lauded chef creates modern British cuisine created using Japanese techniques, and Bloom, a private dining space. There’s also a bar, a library, grand ballroom and a lovely landscaped garden.

Also reflecting the hotel’s botanical theme is a subterranean spa, with a menu of Ayurveda-inspired treatments, a plunge pool and heat experiences, set against a bespoke soundtrack of British woodlands and forests.
